June A. Tryon

June Anne Tryon passed away at home on Thursday, August 21st at the age of 96 surrounded by loving family and friends.

She was born on June 29th, 1929 in New Haven, the daughter of Charles and Anna (Foley) Steele. 

June leaves behind her daughter, Beverly Tryon of Portland, CT and Boston and son James C. Tryon of Hamden and beloved nieces Maureen Quinn of Guilford and Susan Quinn and husband Mike Kiefer of North Branford and grandnephew James P. Quinn of New Haven. She was predeceased by her parents, former husband James A. Tryon, sister Patricia M. Quinn and nephew James J. Quinn.

June grew up in the Westville area of New Haven and raised her family in Hamden. She later lived in North Haven and in 2012 she moved to Portland to live with her family. 

A graduate from St. Mary’s High School in New Haven, June had over 25 years of unwavering service to the Southern New England Telephone Company. She later worked at Catholic Charities Family Services in New Haven and also volunteered her time tutoring English as a Second Language. 

She had a deep and abiding faith and was a member of Saint Mary Church in Portland and enjoyed the Catholic television station ORTV in her later years. She was also a member of the Lay Carmelite Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

June had continuous dedication and love that she showed to her family and friends. She enjoyed playing the keyboard and also the hobby of raising tropical fish. 

Special thanks and deep gratitude to Middlesex Hospice and to the unfailing support and care of home helpers Janet Pomaa and Mary-Katherine Hague.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, August 29that 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Portland. Burial will be in the family plot in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Portland. Friends may call at the Portland Memorial Funeral Home, 231 Main St., Portland on Friday, August 29th from 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in June’s memory to Holy Apostles College and Seminary, 33 Prospect Hill Rd., Cromwell, CT 06416.

Joseph T. Walsh

It is with great sadness that Joseph T. Walsh (Joe) passed away at the age of 88 at home on Friday, August 8th. He was the husband of the late Helen (Bulak) Walsh (Pat). Joe was born on September 28th, 1936, in Middletown to the late Cletus and Yolanda (LaRosa) Walsh. He was a lifelong resident of Portland, where he proudly served as a member of Company 2 fire department, serving as captain at one point. He looked forward to old timers’ night, seeing old friends and reminiscing about the past. 

Joe proudly served in United stated Army from 1960-1962. Prior to his retirement in 1992, he worked for the State of CT DOT out of Glastonbury for over 30 years. He spent many sleepless nights plowing roads and loading the trucks up with sand.

He was an avid outdoors man spending many weekends up north hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. He loved to go on trucking trips with his friend Rooney. 

Joe had a kind and loving spirit, never had a bad word to say about anyone. He was predeceased by his sister Elizabeth Walsh. He leaves behind to mourn his passing his loving daughter Sandy (Jeff) Brady, his sons Joseph Walsh, and Thomas (Marta) Walsh; his 5 grandchildren that he adored, Matthew and Stephen Brady, Morgan Walsh, Zachary and Alexis Walsh.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 15that 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Portland. Burial will be in the family plot in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Portland. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Portland Fire Company #2, 594 Main St., Portland, CT 06480.

The Portland Memorial Funeral Home, 231 Main St. is in charge of arrangements.

Judith Sheehan Graves

Judith Sheehan Graves

Judith Sheehan Graves passed away peacefully Monday, August 4, 2025, at the age of 88.

She was born in Hartford, CT, the daughter of Fred and Helen (Shannon) Sheehan on February 22, 1937. 

Judy was the wife of Richard Graves who passed away in February of 2021. She leaves behind her children: Chris (Pam) Graves, Katie Graves, Jeff (Becki) Graves, and daughter-in-law, Karen Graves. She is survived by 8 grandchildren: Sam (Seth), Megan, Nathan, Evan, Carter, Carly, Riley, Makenna, sister-in-law Carol Graves and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 56 years, her son Dan Graves, her sister Kay Sheehan, her brother Fred Sheehan and his wife Andrea, Sister-in-Law Reet O’Connor and her husband Jim, and brother-in-law Don Graves.

Judy grew up in Northampton, MA and graduated from Northampton High School and continued her education at Smith College earning a BA in American Studies. 

Judy started her career as an art teacher sharing her passion for creativity. It was during this time that she met her husband Rich and they relocated to Portland, CT and together they raised four children. Judy was involved with the church where she found community and purpose. At home she loved working in her garden and most of all loved being with her family. In 2007 she and Rich moved to Laurel Ridge in East Hampton where they quickly became part of the closeknit community. 

Judy will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her creativity, and the way she made everyone feel loved and welcome. Her presence brought warmth to every room and her kindness touched the lives of many.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks for the kindness and care that Judy received from her nurses and caretakers over the past year. 

A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, August 11th at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Portland. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, Portland. Friends may call at the Portland Memorial Funeral Home, 231 Main St, Portland, on Sunday, August 10th from 4-6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Judy’s name to the Portland Food Bank, 7 Waverly Avenue, Portland, CT.
