Gary Tancredi, affectionately known as Dad, Poppy, and “Neighbor,” passed away on May 26th due to complications related to heart disease. Gary was born in Hartford, CT, on December 30th, 1953 to Americo Tancredi and Paula (Colbert) Tancredi. He was a longtime resident of Portland, where he lived for more than 38 years. Gary graduated from Buckley High School in 1971 and began his career in carpentry. He later went on to work at Carling Technologies, where he retired after 37 years of service.
Gary found his greatest happiness in helping others. In his younger years, he loved the outdoors—riding dirt bikes, hunting, fishing, boating, and spending time at his camp in Maine. After settling in Portland, he quickly earned the nickname “Neighbor,” as friends and neighbors alike knew they could always count on him. Whether it was fixing something broken or showing someone how to take on a project themselves, Gary always had the right tool and a willingness to lend a hand.
He was an avid sports fan who especially cherished watching his daughters play basketball and softball. In later years, weekends often found him in his garage, cheering on his favorite teams—the UConn Women’s Basketball team, Red Sox, Celtics and NASCAR— often with a Miller Lite in his hand and friends by his side.
Gary will be remembered as a devoted and loving family man whose kindness, generosity, and steady presence left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
Gary is survived by his wife, Susan; his daughters, Alison DiFlorio and her spouse, Anthony, of Portland; Sarah Manemeit and her spouse, Jesse, of Portland; and Amanda Tancredi of Portland. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Levi Perez, Alexis DiFlorio, and Raelyn Manemeit, as well as his sister, Judy Tancredi of Manchester, and her son, Dustin Tasker.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 1st at 12 noon in the Portland Memorial Funeral Home, 231 Main St., Portland. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, June 1st from 10 a.m. until time of service. Burial will follow in Center Cemetery, Portland.
